How does Runes work?
What is this script?
A phonetic transliteration of modern letters into Elder Futhark signs.
How does it work step by step?
The Elder Futhark has 24 runes. Each modern letter maps phonetically to the closest rune, and sounds without their own sign (such as c or x) use the nearest equivalent.
Example and practical use
The word “RUNE” becomes ᚱᚢᚾᛖ in the Elder Futhark; paste runes back in to read them the other way.
How to use the tool
Choose the “Runes" script, enter text or a number and, when available, switch the transliteration direction. The result is produced locally in your browser and can be copied or shared without sending the text to a server.
History and context
The Elder Futhark contained 24 signs used by Germanic communities. The result is approximate because modern sounds do not always have exact runic equivalents.
Notes and limitations
This tool is educational. The output is an approximate sign transliteration, not a language translation — ancient scripts had their own spelling, grammar and context that a simple converter cannot reproduce.
