Why did one script need 22 signs and another several hundred?
The Phoenician alphabet got by with 22 signs because it recorded consonants only and left the vowels to the reader. Egyptian hieroglyphs needed several hundred, because one sign could stand for a sound, for a whole word, or merely hint at which meaning was intended. Cuneiform recorded many unrelated languages, while Inca quipus encoded numerical data in knotted cords and may also have stored other kinds of information. The number of signs followed what each culture had to write down: accounts, rulers’ names or religious texts.
