Linear B online

Linear B online. Enter a name or number and see it in ancient signs. Learn how it works, its history and a worked example.

How does Linear B work?

What is this script?

Enter known syllables, for example “ka-ro-te”. The tool renders their signs but does not translate into Mycenaean Greek.

How does it work step by step?

It is a syllabary made mostly of consonant-vowel signs. Enter syllables separated by hyphens (for example ka-ro-te) and each becomes one sign; a lone consonant has no symbol of its own.

Example and practical use

The syllables “ka-ro-te” render as three Linear B signs; without hyphens the tool still tries to split known syllables.

How to use the tool

Choose the “Linear B" script, enter text or a number and, when available, switch the transliteration direction. The result is produced locally in your browser and can be copied or shared without sending the text to a server.

History and context

Linear B recorded Mycenaean Greek mainly with consonant-vowel syllabic signs. Surviving tablets mostly concern stores, goods and administration.

Notes and limitations

This tool is educational. The output is an approximate sign transliteration, not a language translation — ancient scripts had their own spelling, grammar and context that a simple converter cannot reproduce.
