How does Mixtec codex work?

What is this script?

Choose a number from 1 to 13 and one of 20 day signs. Each pair forms one of 260 calendar names.

How does it work step by step?

A calendar name is a number from 1 to 13 joined to one of 20 day signs, giving 260 combinations (the tonalpohualli). You pick a number and a day sign, and the pair forms a name such as “8 Deer”.

Example and practical use

The number 8 with the day sign “deer” forms “8 Deer”, the calendar name of a famous Mixtec ruler.

Notes and limitations

This tool is educational. The output is an approximate sign transliteration, not a language translation — ancient scripts had their own spelling, grammar and context that a simple converter cannot reproduce.
