How to read the cords that counted an empire
What exactly did the Inca record in knots?
Inca officials kept the accounts of an entire state on quipus, and did so without a single drawing. They recorded population counts, warehouse stocks and the size of tribute. The information sat in the material: in the number and type of knots, their position on the cord, the colour of the thread and the direction of its twist.
How does this visualisation work?
The tool splits the number you enter into digits and shows each on its own cord: a label gives the value and repeated knots make it easy to read. This is a simplified educational visualisation — a real quipu encoded values through the position of knots along a cord and through several different knot types.
Example: the number 2026
The number 2026 breaks into four digits: 2, 0, 2 and 6. This visualisation gives every digit its own cord and shows zero as an empty space. Historical quipus placed successive decimal positions at different heights on one cord; only the principle that a missing knot at a position meant zero is shared here.

How was a real quipu read?
Cords hung from a thicker main cord, and decimal positions were measured by height: units lowest, then tens, hundreds and thousands. At the units position a long knot was tied with as many turns as the digit required, the value one used a figure-eight knot, and higher positions took simple single knots. An empty space meant zero.
What else did the cords carry?
Beyond numbers, a quipu conveyed information through thread colour, twist direction and the way cords were attached, which allowed data to be grouped by subject. Some surviving quipus cannot be read as numbers and are linked to narrative recording — their meaning is still being researched.

History and interesting facts
A khipu consisted of a main cord with pendant cords whose knot type and position carried meaning. Many administrative khipus recorded decimal numbers: distance from the main cord distinguished units, tens and higher places. Colour, twist and attachment direction could encode additional information. Researchers can interpret many numerical records, but whether and how some khipus represented narratives or language remains an active question. The tool therefore visualises digits without claiming to reconstruct a historical record.
What this tool does not do
The visualisation reproduces neither knot types nor colours nor the hierarchy of subsidiary cords — everything that carried meaning in the original. Nor is it a tool for reading surviving quipus: it only shows how a decimal number breaks into successive positions.
History of the quipu
Knotted cords were used in the Andes long before the Inca, and the state of Tawantinsuyu developed them into an instrument of administration handled by specialists called quipucamayocs. After the Spanish conquest many quipus were destroyed as records of the old faith and accounting. In 1912 Leland Locke demonstrated that surviving examples can be read as numerical records.
