How does Inca quipu work?

What is this script?

The Inca left no known sentence-writing system. Quipu primarily recorded numerical data.

How does it work step by step?

The tool splits a number into digits and shows each digit on a separate cord: a label identifies the digit and repeated knots make it easy to read. This is a simplified educational visualisation — historical quipu encoded values through knot position and different knot types on cords.

Example and practical use

For 2026, the tool creates four cords labelled 2, 0, 2 and 6. Repeated knots visualise the digit values but do not reconstruct historical knot types or positions.

How to use the tool

Choose the “Inca quipu" script, enter text or a number and, when available, switch the transliteration direction. The result is produced locally in your browser and can be copied or shared without sending the text to a server.

History and context

Quipu combined cords, colours and different knots. They primarily recorded numerical information, and the meaning of all their features is not fully understood.

Notes and limitations

This tool is educational. The output is an approximate sign transliteration, not a language translation — ancient scripts had their own spelling, grammar and context that a simple converter cannot reproduce.
